Spring and summer in Texas mean longer days, warmer nights and a big opportunity for businesses: outdoor spaces. Whether it’s a restaurant patio, rooftop bar, brewery or entertainment space, an outdoor AV system can make the difference between a “fine” guest experience and a memorable one that keeps customers coming back again.

While temperatures haven’t begun to rise just yet, now is the time to ensure your outdoor audiovisual setup is ready to welcome guests, foster engagement and extend dwell time.

Are You Ready to Welcome Guests Outdoors?

Outdoor areas often become the most desirable seats in the house once the weather warms up. But without the right AV strategy, these spaces can feel disconnected from your indoor spaces and brand experience.

A thoughtfully designed outdoor AV system allows you to:

  • Create an inviting dining atmosphere with high-quality background music that enhances conversation rather than competing with it
  • Maintain consistent sound and visuals across indoor and outdoor areas, so patios feel like a true extension of your brand
  • Increase revenue by maximizing usable square footage and keeping guests comfortable and staying longer
  • Host live events like trivia, holidays, watch parties for sports, themed entertainment events, movie nights or branded activations

If your current setup relies on portable speakers, inopportune TV placement, inconsistent volume levels or equipment that struggles with outdoor noise and weather conditions, it may be time to upgrade to a professionally designed outdoor AV solution.

Our recent work with Dink n Drink, a restaurant and bar featuring pickleball courts and outdoor seating is a good example of blending indoor and outdoor spaces. They needed a multi-zone sound system with unique volume control in each zone from the bar and restaurant areas to both outdoor and indoor courts. We used the Klipsch PSM-525-T Surface Mount speakers, powered by an Atlas DPA804 Power Amplifier, and Lowell volume control wall plates. We also integrated a handheld microphone and TV audio inputs, in addition to our Harmony music service.

Define the Purpose of Your Outdoor Space

Before choosing AV equipment, the most important step is defining how the outdoor space will be used.Ask yourself:

  • Is the goal relaxed background music for dining or entertainment?
  • Will you host live music, DJs or special events?
  • Do you need TVs for sports, promotions or digital signage?
  • Will the space transition from day to night programming?

A casual patio may need subtle, evenly distributed audio, while a rooftop bar or event venue may require higher output, flexible controls and multiple video displays. Your AV system should support your business goals and not work against them.

We worked with El Alma to customize a new sound system for their expansive rooftop patio that overlooks the Austin, Texas skyline. We crafted a unique sound design that includes hanging Soundtube pendant speakers from the beautiful Live Oak trees that cover the patio. Our tree speaker installations don’t require penetration screws, letting us help create the ultimate wow factor while blending natural aesthetics and not harming the environment.

Plan Audio and Video Zones for Maximum Impact

One of the most common mistakes we see is treating outdoor AV as a single zone. In reality, zoning is essential for both guest comfort and operational flexibility.

Consider breaking your space into zones such as:

  • Dining areas with lower-volume background music
  • Standing or bar areas with more energy and higher audio output
  • Lounge or seating areas with a relaxed sound profile
  • Live music or event zones with dedicated speakers and inputs

Zoned control allows staff to adjust volume, content or TV feeds independently ensuring no area is too loud or too quiet and that every guest has a comfortable experience.

Choose Weather-Resistant and Weather-Proof Speakers

Texas weather can be unpredictable, and outdoor AV equipment must be built to last. Indoor speakers simply won’t survive long outdoors, especially in heat and humidity.

Professional outdoor speakers are designed to:

  • Withstand heat, moisture and UV exposure
  • Deliver clear, consistent sound across open spaces
  • Blend seamlessly into landscaping or architectural features
After their renovation in 2022, we worked with Marker 37 Marina in Corpus Christi, Texas, to take their atmosphere to the next level with a custom audiovisual solution that could withstand the salt, water and sand but still offer a great environment for entertaining. We used a Klipsch system with Symetrix to provide a more durable audio system.
