ABOUT Gunter Hotel

The historic Gunter Hotel recently reopened following a $57 million renovation, blending more than a century of heritage with a renewed creative spirit as part of Marriott’s Tribute Portfolio. Originally opened in 1909, the downtown San Antonio landmark has long been a cultural touchpoint, with deep ties to early jazz and blues history, including iconic recording sessions that shaped American music.

The redesign celebrates this legacy through immersive, music-driven experiences, from a lobby vinyl library of more than 1,000 records to a dedicated vinyl ambassador curating guest listening. Thoughtfully layered with modern design and storytelling, the Gunter invites a new generation of travelers to engage with its past while creating their own.

THE Challenge

Delivering a modern, high-performance audio experience within the historic Gunter Hotel required a careful balance between innovation and preservation. The building’s age and architectural constraints presented challenges for system design, including limited space for equipment, restrictive construction conditions and the need to minimize visual impact on protected interiors.

The hotel’s repositioning as a music-inspired destination required a flexible, high-quality audio solution capable of supporting everything from ambient playback to live events and studio recording, while establishing a cohesive and seamless integration that was easy for the Gunter team to use.

OUR Solution

Mood Texas delivered a fully integrated, property-wide audio and AV solution designed to enhance the guest experience while respecting the historic character of Gunter Hotel.

Custom sound systems were installed across public spaces, including ballrooms, terrace, pool deck and fitness areas. These featured discreet, high-fidelity Klipsch ceiling speakers selected for both performance and visual cohesion. A combination of specialized speaker models and subwoofers ensured consistent, high-quality sound tailored to each environment. Our team used PIC-525, the PIC-525-T-SC, which is shorter to fit tight spaces, and the PIC-800-SW-T subwoofer in the ballrooms for better low-end sound.

At the core of the system, LEA amplifiers and a Q-SYS Core 110f platform provide scalable, networked audio control with intuitive operation via in-wall touchscreens. The solution extends into meeting and event spaces with flexible AV capabilities, including mobile display carts and adaptable input/output infrastructure.

Mood Texas also supported the hotel’s creative programming by delivering the full audio backbone for an on-site recording studio, enabling a seamless blend of hospitality, technology, and musical storytelling.
